المعروف أن المكتبات نشأت -في البداية- كضرورة لحفظ التسجيلات الناجمة عن تراكم وسائط الكتابة الأولى ، مثل الألواح الطينية ، والجلود ، وأوراق البردي . وبالتالي فكان ظهورها مرتبطاً بإزدهار الكتابة وفي مناطق الحضارات القديمة ، كبابل وسومر مصر القديمة واليونان ..إلخ ، ويرجح أن تكون أولى المكتبات قد ظهرت في القرن الخامس قبل الميلاد .

These archives were made up almost completely of the records of commercial transactions or inventories, with only a few documents touching theological matters, historical records or legends. Things were much the same in the government and temple records on papyrus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Papyrus) of Ancient Egypt (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ancient_Egypt).
The earliest discovered private archives were kept at Ugarit (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ugarit); besides correspondence and inventories, texts of myths may have been standardized practice-texts for teaching new scribes.
Private or personal libraries made up of non-fiction (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Non-fiction) and fiction (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fiction) books, (as opposed to the state or institutional records kept in archives) first appeared in classical Greece (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Classical_Greece). The first ones appeared some time near the 5th century BC (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/5th_century_BC). The celebrated book collectors of Hellenistic Antiquity were listed in the late
